Daily Errand

While I haven’t been feeling very inspired by the Daily Shoot prompts lately, I have been wanting to try another image story since we experimented with them in class. I asked my grandpa if I could “shadow” him as he checked the mail today and narrowed several shots down to these six.

The Daily Shoot prompt for today:

Symmetry can be calm and soothing. Make a photo today featuring symmetry, either in subject or composition.

Image Stories

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

Because I don’t do too much Web surfing, coming up with an Internet image story relevant to my life was a challenging assignment.  The example that finally came to mind was from the Vancouver Olympic games.  Last year, my family followed the Olympic torch relay across Canada through an interactive map of the torch’s journey across the country.  (It even made it to the North Pole!)  Unfortunately, when I went to the site today, it seems as though all photos were removed from the map, but are apparently archived here (although I couldn’t get them to display.  Maybe it’s my browser? This glitch is really annoying!)  At least there’s a (functioning) video gallery of the 106-day relay, which probably does the event more justice then pictures alone anyway.  This story has particular significance to my life because a family friend was a torch bearer in Plaster Rock, NB!

The lack of pictures on the Olympic site inspired me to look elsewhere for image stories.  Eventually, I came across the work of the photographer Duane Michals, who composed photographic narratives during the latter half of the 20th century.  Many examples of Michals’ work are available online, and I really enjoyed, “I Build A Pyramid,” which is animated below (if the image is still, try viewing this version.)

Another amusing narrative (created from self-portraits!):

Image Story

So I’ve never really looked for image stories on the internet before, and if I’ve seen any that had an effect on my i must have forgotten them. However, one of my favorite sites is The Oatmeal, which produces some hilarious comics ranging from how to use semicolons correctly to jokes about other uses for prostitutes. So i figured this might be a great place to find an image story, and then the one I found actually made me laugh a lot. I guess that’s enough, right?

Here’s the link to the image story (warning, profane language at the end, but worth it): Dear Slinky

Eight Years in Under Two Minutes

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

I already blogged about an image story last night, but I just found this video and think it compliments The Arrow of Time nicely.

From 1996-2006, JK Keller took a daily image of himself. Here’s the result-in video form:

The Good Time Boys

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

The good time boys were out for an afternoon of winter sporting. One friend bets the other he cannot shoot a pear off his head. The friend with gun, thinking he is a very hot shot, readily accepts the bet. The gun toting friend ended up hitting his pear friend, so he had to run away with his accomplice. Unfortunately for the two friends, their get-away car was in the process of being towed for a parking violation.

Bangladeshi Boat Bridge

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

I found this picture of the floating bridge on MSNBC’s Photoblog and thought it was beautiful. The way the boats snake through the water hyacinth which are covering the river originally caught my eye. And then I started to look at each person walking across that bridge and saw a new story in each face. I like that this picture isn’t focused on one person and you can’t quite read each face but you have to look at everything together. For a brief moment in time the lives of each person on that bridge cross and this picture captures that exact moment. It’s pretty neat to think about.

I also really enjoyed the entire concept of the photoblog. The idea of getting news through pictures is pretty powerful. There are a bunch of awesome images on that site and I suggest checking it out. If I blogged about every image that stuck out to me, this post would never end, but here are a few other favorites:

And I could go on, but I’ll let you explore for yourself!

Visual Story

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

This is from a book I have called Art & Sole (Contemporary Sneaker Art & Design). This image is by Jun Goshima and it’s titled Original Piece. I believe it is referencing the first Nike Dunk, because in the book the exhibition, all the pictures feature a Nike Dunk. I just think it looks cool and shows how sneakers can inspire art and vice versa.

The Guitar Luthier, This is a link to a image story which contains 5 frames. It is a man working on a guitar, but the black and white pictures give it a interesting effect. Also you can see how much the man loves his craft and is focused on perfecting it. The last image is him with the finished product and him just losing himself in it.

Image Story :]

Before I share my image story I have to post this picture, because it is adorable! :D

Baby Deer

Now for the Image Story:

First off, I want to share this image story about evolution, though the image is quite large. So here is the link.

Second, on a related note….
insignificant

This is another cool image a found which really grounds me as to how small I am compared to well… everything. Usually when I am browsing the web I veer towards these Image stories, however the evolution one is the one that I always return to, just because it fascinates me :/

Sorry if I made people depressed… haha
