The show I chose to write about is HBO’s series True Blood. Not only because I find it really interesting, but also because it is the only show I consistently keep up with. The show is about the struggle between vampires and humans, and I know what pops into a lot of people’s minds immediately…Twilight. All i can say to that is NO, not at all. This show is a better version of twilight. Yes there is love going on between a human female and a vampire but there is also a lot more going on. They have Sookie Stackhouse and Bill Compton who are in love, Bill is a vampire and Sookie is a human, or so she thought. In the first season there are a lot of twists in turns including Sookie’s grandmother being murdered, and the murderer ended up being Sookie’s coworker’s husband, who isn’t actually Cajun like he pretends to be. Another huge thing that boggles the mind is that Sookie can read the minds of humans but not vampires. This makes you wonder the entire first season what she could be. I put the trailer here so you can get a taste of season 1.

Season 1 Trailer

In season 2, a church group starts to train a group called “soldiers of the Sun”, in which they are going to try to use to kill off vampires. The most powerful vampire alive allows them to capture him to see what they wish to do, knowing he can escape at anytime. After puting an end to the group he decides that there is no reason for him to go on living, 2,000 years was enough. He stays on the roof of a building past sunrise and burns. There is also another powerful being that is introduced, a maenad. There isn’t a very clear explanation of what that is but vampires cannot hurt her. I don’t want to give away too many details but they eventually get rid of her.

Season 2 Trailer

Another reason why I like this show is for its amazing cliff hangers at the end of every episode. It leaves you wondering for a week “what the hell?”. In season 3 the fight between the humans and vampires gets really heated when one of the oldest and strongest vampires kills a news anchor on national television. This starts a huge uprise from the humans thinking that if one vampire is that crazy, then they all are. We also gain more insight into what Sookie is and that she may even have the power to stop the strongest vampire. Werewolves are also introduced into the story in season 3, and they are even used to do vampires bidding as long as they are given V. Vampire blood, called V, is a drug in the show that helps you heal and makes you stronger for a certain amount of time, so the werewolves trade their services for V.

Season 3 Trailer

Season 4 airs this summer and I can’t wait.

Homage to Sport Science

Sunday, November 28th, 2010

So, as much as I would LOVE to recreate my own episode of sport science, I do not posses any of the technology needed to do so. However, I do own equipment to do basic physics experiments in my kitchen! With the help of my family and a few friends, I’ve created my own Kitchen Science video.

I left a lot of this unedited in order to truly capture the essence of my family dynamic. I hope it gives you a good look into the Strat family, because not only am I obsessed with science, as much as I hate to admit it I’m a big fan of my family’s quirky nerdiness, too.

No Gravatar

This week my professor asked the class to make something that would pay homage to the object of our obsession, a post that was prompted by last week’s class. As most of you know, I posted about one of my favorite shows, Saturday Night Live. I had originally decided that I would make a remix of the opening song by mixing it with the hit song of each performing artist of this current season. Great idea, right? Well it wasn’t so easily executed and that is part of the reason why this is getting posted so late. After many failed attempts I decided to just post my favorite clips from this current season. I hope that you all enjoy and please tell me which one’s are your favorites.

This first one is from last week’s episode. I love it because I feel like everyone knows a One-uper.

WARNING: There is a bit of crude humor in this one! I like this one because it is so catchy and Shy Ronnie is hilarious.

I love how catchy this one is! I was singing this for like 10 minutes after I watched this…Hey everybody did you hear the news…..!

This one is a good one because it sounds like it could easily be true! Don’t Black Friday commercials really sound like this!?

I love how well he can rap in these voices! I mean it really sounds like Jay Z, Drake, and Biggie are actually saying it!

WARNING: Again slightly crude humor! Can I just say that I love Jane as Sue from Glee! This one is funny because of how wacky it is!

I love these musical parodies! Sounds so similar!

I love how accurate Nancy Pelosi’s facial expressions are!

hahahah! This one speaks for itself!

I hope that you enjoyed all of my favorite clips from this SNL Season 36

WANTED: Obernewtyn Fan Fiction

Tuesday, November 23rd, 2010

I know that this post is focused on something that most people know absolutely nothing about, but I just can’t help but to share what I love. I think taking fan fiction to the next level is a really interesting thing that I definitly will search fo in the future. So now to my post.

In the Obernewtn  Chronicles (in the beginning of the series) in this world there are two major governing groups 1. The Council- which is corrupt government agency which condemns misfits (those with special abilities) and those who seek too much knowledge and power and 2. the  Herder Faction- a corrupted religious organization (just to be clear  the author makes it clear she isn’t criticizing religion, just that this one has lost sight of what is right and wrong) they also condemn misfits and they also have more power with the people because they use peoples beliefs and fears to control them. As my Fan Fiction I  created three Wanted Posters that I think either the Council or the Herder Faction would put up.

The first person is the druid and he was a former Herder, but he was unable to justify the destuction of books. So he creates a community in the highland of people where they still contain the hatred of  misfts, however they do not abide by the laws of the council. This community and the Obernewtyn community ( a secret haven for misfits) have dealt with each other a lot in their travels, and they continue to play an important role throughout the books.

The second  picture is that  of an infamous slave trader, called Salamander, he has taken the one major character Matthew and the Druid’s community and has taken them to the Red Land which is where Elspeth’s(protagonist) quest will lead.

She is gypsy that Elspeth and others saved at the beginning of the Ashling, fom being burned by the herder’s, she has ties to the Pure-Blood Gypsies, which allowed her to be introduced to the gypsy Swallow, who is imortant for Elspeth’s quest.

My Obsession: Sport Science

Tuesday, November 23rd, 2010

So, I would like to share with everyone a show that I love called “Sport Science.” Barely any of my friends have heard of it, so I really wanted to spread the word. This show is a fascinating mix between athletics and physics. They slowly break down all of the minor components of the physiology that goes into simple (and not so simple) athletic movements. The show brings in all sorts of professional athletes, most of which are pretty famous, and has them run the tests for the scientists to analyze. There is a lot of interesting and unique technology that provides all of the data. So here’s a taste of a few of my favorite episodes, in order to let you get a better feel of this show.

Who can squeeze tighter, a boa constrictor or a wrestler giving a head lock?
Who can run backwards faster, a sports car in reverse or a corner back?
Who can run faster forwards, an ostrich or a wide receiver? (they seriously had an ostrich)
How well can a receiver catch a football in a variety of circumstances, including being hung upside down?
What types of lies can a golfer hit a ball out of? Sand, popcorn, jello, spaghetti?
Who can punch harder, male or female boxers of the same size?
How much can a person eat in food eating contests?
How difficult is it to bite off someone’s ear like Mike Tyson did?
How force is required to break a backboard?
Who can run faster, a zombie or a golfer? (just kidding, that ones from you J Groom)

What’s really embarrassing, is that I recalled all of these episodes from memory… in about 2 minutes. Anyway, to pay homage to this great show, and maintain the theme of my blog, I really want to share this episode. It compares the force of blocking a punt in football to standing in a wall and blocking a shot in soccer. As a defender, it’s REALLY important to block shots. Granted no one we play against can kick the ball as freakishly hard as the pro in this episode, but it still sucks to be so vulnerable! Hope you like it! You can find more clips of episodes on youtube if you’re interested!

My Tale of the Three Brothers

Monday, November 22nd, 2010

My obsession, if you didn’t get a chance to read all about it, had to do with my love-hate relationship with Harry Potter. Since I absolutely love the book series, and feel quite the opposite towards the films, I thought I’d stop whining and actually do something. SO! Here’s my interpretation of one of the scenes from the first part of the last HP movie.

LOTS of love and thanks for my brave Korean friend and neighbor, Serena, for providing the vocal talents for this project!

I would have shown more LEGO’s, but the video was about 2:20, and my audio was 4:30, so I had to stretch stuff and add the few images from the book. The numbers were supposed to help you keep track of the brothers…but probably could have been executed better! What I meant by having a Korean exchange student read the story and pair that with some LEGO’s and images from the book was to show how if I made the movies they’d be based soley on the books and wouldn’t have anything to do with fine actors or special effects. In fact, I’d probably just show a blank screen with the message, “Go read the books!!”

P.S. If you haven’t yet, PLEASE read the books! (Or at least read them before you see the final film!) Thanks!

:]

Harry Potter Fan Fiction

Monday, November 22nd, 2010

I am sorry for the lengthy posts recently! However it just happens when one talks about their obsession I suppose. For my tribute to the Harry Potter series I decided to write up an introduction to a story that could be a spin off of the Harry Potter series. Really this story is about Clara, the Great-Grand daughter of Harry Potter himself. However the introduction doesn’t mention this, because it is in fact an introduction. ;) Now before you critique me for composition and English-major type things, just be warned I am not an English major! I just like to write stories. Sometimes I think that people over analyze stories and in fact forget that they were originally meant to be a story. So I hope that if you read this, you can enjoy it as a story. Enjoy! :D

Miss Wells was a very well to do neighbor. She knew everything about anyone and possibly more than what they knew themselves. Every afternoon at precisely 3 PM she would take a leisurely stroll through Privet Drive to watch the families which lived there. Miss Wells lived for any information which might have passed her ears. Normally there was not much which changed on Privet Drive. However today was different. There was a new family which had just moved into Number 4 Privet Drive. The Doyles. They were an odd lot she had heard, kept to themselves. They also had a little girl with a mess of dark hair and bright green eyes. Miss Potts commented that she looked like one of those tree sprites you hear about in fairy tales.

However, Miss Wells knew that it was her duty to properly introduce herself to these new people. No matter how strange their appearance. So she had baked a cake early this morning and was determined to make their acquaintance. She walked steadily up to the house, noticing with pleasure that the lawn was very well manicured. She rang the doorbell and had only to wait for a passing minute before Mr. Doyle opened the door with a surprised look on his face.

“Well hello, my name is Mr. Doyle. As you can see we are still unpacking, what can I do for you?”

“Well hello Mr. Doyle, my name is Miss Wells. It would appear that we are to be neighbors, for you see I live over in house Number 9. I have brought this cake for you and your family to enjoy. For I am sure that unpacking can be quite exhausting.”

“It is good to meet you! Do come in and have a seat. Bri we have visitors!” Mr. Doyle called up the stairs.

Miss Wells was ushered in to a cozy living room still littered with unpacked boxes. There was a plush red couch which sat in front of a large window facing Privet Drive. Normally Miss Wells would frown upon such eccentricities; however this couch seemed to fit into the living room. She gingerly placed the cake onto the bamboo coffee table and walked 3 steps to the fireplace. There were 3 pictures on the mantel. One was an image of a young couple. Presumably Mr. Doyle and his wife. For the young male was a spitting image of the man who had greeted her at the front door. He had the same dark eyes and slicked back hair. His was indeed a handsome face; however it wasn’t a warm one. Which was the complete opposite of the young woman with him. She had such merry eyes, sparkling with some secret that Miss Wells knew nothing about. She also had a head of wild untamable red hair; she wasn’t what Miss Wells would consider to be a beauty. However here spirit more than made up for it. This woman had a passion which stood in such contrast to the man standing next to her.

The second picture was that of six boys, each looked to be a year apart from the other and they all resembled their father. This picture only made Miss Wells wonder who these 6 boys were, for as far as she knew the couple only had a young daughter. The mere thought of there being something she didn’t know flustered her. So after a few breaths she turned to the final picture, only to lose her breath again. It was a picture of a young girl running through a forest. She presumably had inherited her father’s raven black hair, however it was just as wild and untamed like that of her mother. She had the same merriness that her mother held, combined with the handsome face of her father. However, what was most peculiar about her were her eyes. They were such a deep green and they seemed to hold a whole different world in them. Miss Wells was just thinking about the time when she was a little girl running through the meadows early in the morning. When the sun rose it reflected the dew shining off of the grass, creating an almost fairytale world. This world was in the girl’s eyes.

“Ah, I see you found Clara. Unfortunately she is at school right now so you will not be able to meet her. My name is Briana! Would you like some coffee?”

Startled out of her thoughts Miss Wells turned to see the woman from the first picture. She looked to be such a kind hearted soul, and Miss Wells was thankful that she would be the new neighbor here.

“Oh, dearie, I just came by to say hi! Look at the time! I best be off before it gets too dark. It was so nice to make your acquaintance. Do come over to my place for tea and biscuits sometime, I live over in house Number 9. I would love to hear more about where you came from and meet little Clara!” Miss Wells gestured towards the picture of the little girl, for she truly did want to know more about this new family. She already had many things to share with Miss Potts.

“Why yes, that would be wonderful. Thank you so much for this cake, it looks positively delicious.” Briana said as Miss Wells stepped back outside.

“I give you the best wishes on your move in, and do stop by.” With that, Miss Wells was heading back down Privet Drive.

Yes, Miss Wells concluded, the Doyles were a perfectly normal family. She could ease Miss Potts’ worries about them being somehow related to “that wizard scandal” everyone has been talking about. Surely wizards would not be as kind as the dear Mrs. Doyle? As she walked back home she saw an owl fly overhead. Strange, she thought, she has never seen any owls here before. However she just shrugged her shoulders and kept walking. What she did not see was that the owl flew down into the chimney of the Doyle house as if that was in fact, it’s destination.

Fan Fiction

Thursday, November 18th, 2010

Me: “Hey honey, do you want to watch TV with me?” BF: “Only if it isn’t about weddings or babies.” I am a TLC fan (probably to the extreme) and anything that has to do with kids, families or weddings, I’ll be the first to turn it on. I will admit that it’s kind of ridiculous! I’m definitely not in a hurry to have kids or get married, but watching these shows makes me think about what my future looks like.

In Four Weddings the brides compete for an all expense paid honeymoon. Each of the four brides attends the others weddings and rates them on a scale of 1-10 for the overall wedding/reception and then separate scores for dress, venue and ceremony. I really like this show because it’s interesting to see what people do for their weddings and how much they spend on them (which is often a CRAZY amount)!

Babies, without fail, are always adorable. I love babies and toddlers and I’ve even joked that when I have kids, I’ll keep them until they’re school age. Recently I’ve decided that once I graduate UMW with a Bachelor’s degree in Economics, I’m going to go to nursing school and eventually get a Master’s in nursing. Yes, kind of opposite, but I love kids and I’ve passed the mark to become a teacher. My ultimate goal is to work in the Neonatal part of a hospital and maybe the NICU. Back to this show: Bringing Home Baby tells the story of families and the first 36 hours home with their newborns. Reminds me of how much I appreciate sleep!

This is my new obsession. I am not a fan of polygamy, but it’s really interesting to see how such families function. I am fascinated with the idea of polygamy and how the women deal with it. Recently, Kody married a fourth wife and this coming Sunday they are having a special episode showing the other 4 wives and how they are handling their husband being gone on his honeymoon. There is no way on this earth I could be one of multiple wives! Maybe it’s simply because I am not brought up in the religion/practice, but I can’t imagine having to share my husband with other women. It is mind boggling to me that these women find it okay for their husband to have multiple wives, while they can only have ONE man…that they have to share.

SNL: My Current Obsession

Thursday, November 18th, 2010

This week my professor asked our class to blog about something that we are obsessed with. May I begin by saying that by “OBSESSION” he means something that we really love to do, watch, or follow. I make this distinction because when I think of the work “obsession” I think back to that crazy Beyonce movie, the one where the lady was obsessed with Beyonce’s husband.

Though obsession can mean to be so in love with something to the point of stalking it, this word most commonly is used to refer to something that a person is really devoted to, something that they love.

As I thought about it I realized that there are many things that I am “obsessed” with at the moment. Here is a small list of just a few things that I really love…

COACH
For one thing, I love purses. I am currently hooked on expanding my collection of Coach bags. The one that I have my eye on at the moment is a new bag featured in the POPPY collection. It is called the Coach Poppy Signature Sateen Lurex Highlight.

Coach Poppy Signature Sateen Lurex Highlight

FOOD
The next thing that I am obsessed with good food. My roommate and I love food so much. Here are our top 3 places that we love to eat at.

1) Carrabba’s- Great food, wonderful atmosphere and always leave with left overs
2)T.G.I Friday’s- Great food, great service, great atmosphere
3)Chipotle- Great food, excellent service, alway leave full and happy

DANCE
As most of you know, I love to dance. So I guess in many ways Dance an obsession of mine. At UMW we have a club for the performing arts, mostly dance. I am so happy that I am in PAC because I get to dance in the Small and Big shows, though I am not in this coming Big Show. I suggest that all of you go see the PAC Big Show in Dodd this Friday and Sunday. I feel like its always good to support the arts.

SNL
I guess the one obsession that I am going to focus on for this particular assignment will be my love of the Saturday Night Live show. I love this show because it is so funny and in many ways it shows popular instances that basically shape our culture at given times. I say this to mean that SNL uses current news, in most cases, to draw skit material from; because of this SNL not only provides comic relief, but also shows what or who was popular at the time. I also love the fact that there is always a celebrity host and performance by someone who has a hit song out at the time of the show. Though at times it can be a little crude, overall it is a great show and I tune in just about every Saturday from 11:30-about 1:00 to watch it. Here are a few of my favorite skits from past episodes.

Sorry this one isn’t so professional but YouTube took it off because it was not authorized

Fan Fiction: Harry Potter Addition

Thursday, November 18th, 2010

Well as you might have noticed from my mash up I am a fan of Harry Potter, however I am more so a fan of the books rather than the movies. I think this video also serves as a proper introduction…

The books for me represented something constant between my moving around all over the world. I found that it was easier for me to relate to Harry as he discovered and was introduced to a completely different world. I felt the same way every time I was switched to a different school. I am sure other people in the class are doing Harry Potter because it is a story which spans our entire childhood. For me, each book upon its release represented a different phase in my own personal life. Not only that but I can proudly say that I hold copies of books released in 3 different countries, and 3 different states. Pretty awesome, right? So I decided for this post I will go through all 7 books and talk about where I got them, how I got them, and what I remember about me first reading that book…

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

Looking back on this book, I keep thinking how it is strange you remember things so vividly. Things such as a book which you are very soon about to become obsessed with. I was in fifth grade and still in Ft. Drum, NY when I first picked this book up, it was being sold in the middle school library. They were having some sort of Scholastic Book Fair… I don’t remember those details. But I do remember other kids from my class talking about this book that they read. I had noticed the book there during school and I really wanted to take a copy of my own. However, being the fifth grader I was, I lacked the money required to make such a purchase. However I had a plan. That day my mom was picking me up early from school, I think I had a dentist appointment… When the office called me down to be picked up I absolutely insisted my mom come look at the library real quick.

Now I am pretty positive my mom knew I had found another book 1 that I had to have, but she played along and came with. Thats when I showed her the Harry Potter books. They were sitting on their own table, spread out in a circle so that one could casually walk by and pick it up. I cared for nothing else at that book fare, except that I had to have that book. I showed it to my mom and I told her that I had to have it. She then looked at me and did the, “Are you sure you will read this?” as moms are apparently supposed to do. 2 I remember responding, “Yes mom! I will!” So she caved and bought the book.

The entire ride to whatever appointment I had, I did not open the book. Not once. Not even to take a peak. I wanted to savor the beginning of the story in one sitting, with out any interruptions. My mom thought this was childish of me, but she just rolled her eyes. When we finally came home, I dropped everything and ran to the living room to the comfiest chair we had and began to read, “Mr. and Mrs. Dursley, of number four, Privet Drive, were proud to say that they were perfectly normal, thank you very much. They were the last people you’d expect to be involved in anything strange or mysterious, because they just didn’t hold with such nonsense.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Now I was hooked. There was only one problem. The next copy wasn’t available, and wouldn’t be available till that summer. However, something came up that prevented me from buying the next book and I actually didn’t get the second book until my 11th birthday. January 10, 2000. One of my mom’s friends bought it for me. And quite honestly, it is the only gift I remember receiving that year. Soon after my birthday, like legitimately 10-15 days, we began to pack up. It was time to move. We were going to live in Germany! However there was some sort of complications, where paerwork was lost and we were still going to be kicked out of the Housing we had in Ft. Drum. I remember this presented a new set of problems, because we had no where to go. So our Aunt took us in. She lived down in Florida and she said that we could stay there until the military found our paperwork saying we could go overseas.

Now my dad was already in Germany, and he had found us a place to stay. The problem was more the military wasn’t recognizing that his family was supposed to be there to. So for 3 months, it was my mom, me and my 2 brothers living with my Aunt, Uncle and my Grandfather in Florida. My grandpa was a teacher so we were still home schooled at this time, but we didn’t really follow any guidelines. And soon boredom set in. To compensate for this my Aunt took me out and asked if I wanted to get a book. Well, of course I did, the third Harry Potter book was out! So she bought me that and we headed back to her home. The third book soon proved to be my favorite that I had read so far, and for the most part still is. 3

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Now these I will run through briefly, as I am sure you have realized by now I am obsessed. And honestly, it is kind of strange to look at your life through the publication of a book series. But that was what most of my child hood was.

Now that first summer we were in Germany the fourth Harry potter book came out. And honestly, I am grateful it did. Because it was a long summer. I didn’t have that many friends, and those I did briefly meet in the 2 1/2 months at school I wasn’t really close to. So I spent most of my summer looking forward to the day that the fourth Harry Potter book came out. What I remember about this book, was that it was the first book where they had “midnight release.” The base made a really big deal about it. But I didn’t see the point, because I would have any friends there. So the next morning after it’s release I went and used my savings to buy the book. Needless to say, after finishing the book I was quite upset the next one hadn’t come out yet.

And it’s release 3 years later coincided with my families summer trip to Italy. We had decided as a gift to my Oma to take her to Naples, because she had always wanted to go but never had the chance. Now the book was released during our trip to Italy. Not to fear however! Because there was a base nearby where we were staying. And my mom promised that when we went to stock up on supplies I could by the book. So two days after it’s release, I owned a copy. The rest of my trip was spent me reading and re-reading that book. Along with participating in other various touristy activities of course.

The next two years I became obsessed. I became the definition of a Harry Potter Fan. I stalked fan sites such as Mugglenet and the Leaky Cauldron.  I wanted, and needed to know how it ended. I began formulating my own theories about relationships, what everything meant, how it would end and so on. So by the time we had packed up and moved to Massachusetts in 2005, I was thoroughly immersed in the Harry Potter culture. That summer I moved, was the summer when the 6th book came out. Like the previous time I moved, I didn’t have any friends. I hadn’t even gone to school yet! So buying the book in the BX proved to be reasonable distraction for the summer.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

As for the final book, it was released in another summer which I moved. The summer after my graduation from High School. Soon after I graduated my Dad finally retired and we packed up and moved down here to beautiful Virginia. It being summer (again) I didn’t have much to do because I didn’t know anyone. And by this time I was looking forward to the release of the final book, I wanted questions I had been agonizing over for the past 3 years or so answered. Also I wanted to find out whether or not Snape was good or evil. 4 So when I heard that the Borders here in Fredericksburg was having a midnight release party, I had to go. I hadn’t been to one yet and I convinced my mom to go because the book would be $5 cheaper if we went. And of course, my little brother, Nicki, had to come to. 5 But yes, I acquired the final book and spent the next day reading the entire book while sitting by a lake. Honestly, that memory of the sun warming my back and the breeze blowing every once in a while is almost a perfect ending to this obsession. I was 18, it was time for this chapter of the last 7 or 8 years of my life to close, and it closed in an almost dreamlike manner. However, the stories and the lessons I learned from Harry Potter will stay with me for the rest of my life.

  1. I was book-obsessed as a child, and still am
  2. Like I said earlier, I was obsessed with books, of course I was going to read it!
  3. Not including the 7th ;)
  4. I was right by the way!!!!!
  5. He grew up with the movies, and is also a big fan of the series. He is actually reading the series now! I am such a proud sister.
